Babs
adventures as a Fire fighter for the day!
Check it
out - today I have been visiting the local fire station.
Now I
thought I would be playing pool all day, drinking tea, then popping out to
rescue the occasional cat up a tree!
How wrong I
was, the Firefighters have a really busy schedule to keep to.
This is how
my day went:
08:00 -
Standing to attention in my shiny boots! (I feel very small!)
08:30 –
Checking of kit.
**** ALARMS GO!! *****
This turns
out to be a false alarm at a warehouse. Even if it’s just an alarm going off,
the crews need to react to this as a emergency!
09:00 – Out
to do routine home fire risk checks, we check elderly and vulnerable people
have enough smoke alarms and make their homes as safe against fire as we can.
10:00 – Back
to the station for tea and toast!
**** ALARMS GO!! *****
We have a
call out to a RTC (Road Traffic Collision)
12:00 –
Back to the station – lunchtime.
12:30 –
Drill time. To be a good Firefighter we need to practise for every possible
scenario, as we go to such a variety of jobs.. This afternoon we are dressed up
in gas tight green suits! We are practising for a possible chemical spill !
**** ALARMS GO!! *****
Control
have had a report of a kitten that has got its head trapped in a small hole in
the bottom of an industrial bin!!! The officer in charge uses some washing up
liquid to grease around the little kittens neck and slowly and carefully frees
the little mite! A happy ending.
16:00 – The
fire engine needs to be kept looking smart so is washed every day. I have been
given the job!
16:30 –
Next is a visit to a local school to do a risk assessment of the building, this
will include:
·
where
the exits are?
·
how
many life risks are on site day and night times?
·
Where
the rendezvous points are?
·
Where
the site access points are?
·
The
building construction types?
·
Have
sandwich panels been used in the building?
·
And
where the nearest Fire Hydrants are for access to water!
18:00 –
Back to the station and I am shattered!
On this day
out I have learnt that Firefighters do a really diverse job, it’s not all about
drinking tea and putting fires out, they work a great deal in the local
communities to help keep us all safe!
Darlings I'm so, so tired but you can keep up with my adventures by following me @babsthewonderdog on twitter.
